🌿 Laxman Nayak – The Gandhi of South Odisha Who Was Hanged for Speaking Up

“He didn’t carry weapons. Just hope. And yet, they feared him.”

🏹 Who Was Laxman Nayak?

Laxman Nayak was born in 1899 in a small tribal village in the Koraput district of Odisha. He belonged to the Bhumia tribe — one of the many indigenous communities in India. These people lived close to nature, but far from justice.

Even without formal education, Laxman became a leader. He spoke for the voiceless and fought without violence — just like Mahatma Gandhi.

🌀 A Follower of Gandhi’s Path

Inspired by Gandhi’s ideas of non-violence and truth, Laxman Nayak organized peaceful movements among the local people. He taught them:

  • Not to fear the British
  • To stand up for their land and rights
  • That everyone is equal — no matter rich or poor

The British began calling him the “Gandhi of Koraput”.

🔥 The Peaceful Protest That Led to His Death

On 29th August 1942, during the Quit India Movement, Laxman Nayak led a non-violent march to the Mathili Police Station. He wanted to hoist the national flag and demand freedom.

But the British police attacked. Many were beaten and killed.

Though Laxman did not harm anyone, he was falsely accused of leading the violence.

⚖️ Unfair Trial, Brave End

He was arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to death, even though there was no real evidence.

On 29th March 1943, he was hanged in Berhampur Jail.

He was only 43 years old.

🕯️ Why We Don’t Hear About Him

  • He came from a tribal community, often ignored in history
  • He didn’t become famous — he became a martyr
  • There are no photos of him today, only stories from villagers

🧠 What We Learn From Laxman Nayak

  • True courage needs no sword. Only conviction.
  • Tribal communities also gave heroes to India’s freedom
  • Every corner of India — even forests and hills — fought for freedom

Let’s remember that India’s freedom was not just earned in Delhi or Mumbai — it was also earned in the villages of Koraput, where one man stood against the empire with only truth and love for his land.
